Winds of Life

My Canoe @ Urban Ecology Center
Nature consistently provides me with some kind of life or biblical application. Today on my canoe, enjoying the sound of nothing but birds chirping and bugs buzzing about, I stopped rowing and laid back to take it all in. For a few moments I closed my eyes, and after opening them only moments later, I realized the wind was pushing the boat towards a patch of reeds I was about to get stuck in.

Life is like that. If we let winds of negative influences, improper motives, temptation & stress impact us more than our God-given direction and obedience, we end up where we don't want to be, or shouldn't be, sometimes completely turned around – stuck, even.

When we let the wind blow us away it's that much more work to get back to where we wanted to be. Difficulty increases because we then have to return against the current. Stay focused and don't let the winds of life take control of your direction.

In The Word

Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. - Ephesians 4:14 (NIV)

But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does. - James 1:6-8 (NIV)

Membership: Priceless

Are you a member? Why is membership important?

In Pastor Rob’s sermon series based on the ‘9 Marks of a Healthy Church’, one of the marks highlighted is Membership. As we recently presented a new group of members at EMF, and prepare to begin another round of membership classes, consider why membership is important to you.

At EMF we recognize the need for a formal membership for at least three reasons.
  1. First, we believe the concept of membership is biblical. While the term “church member” is never used, the concept is implicit throughout the New Testament. Believers clearly identified themselves with a specific local body and were challenged to become devoted participants.
  2. Second, formal membership is valuable to the leaders of the church as they seek to fulfill their God-given task of shepherding. Our church is and always will be a place where everyone is welcome to come and explore. At some point, however, it is important to identify those who truly comprise the “flock” at Everlasting Mercy Fellowship — the core that can be counted on to build and sustain the ministries of the church. Every team needs a roster.
  3. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, experience shows that membership benefits the individual. In a culture where commitment is no longer highly valued, recognizable membership is an important step that moves each of us out of the vague clouds of our good intentions and into the clear light of committed participation. It presents a challenge to “step out of the stands” and publicly affirm a commitment to Christ and to a specific local body. In a sense, membership can be a significant “defining moment” in one’s lifelong discipleship journey.

Check out the notes from the 9 Marks site about membership:

What is it? According to the Bible, church membership is a commitment every Christian should make to attend, love, serve, and submit to a local church. Where is it in the Bible?

  • Throughout Old Testament history, God made a clear distinction between his people and the world (see Lev. 13:46, Num. 5:3, Deut. 7:3).
  • Christ says that entering the kingdom of God means being bound to the church “on earth” (Matt. 16:16-19; 18:17-19). Where do we see the church on earth? The local church.
  • The New Testament explicitly refers to some people being inside the church and some people being outside (1 Cor. 5:12-13). This is much more than a casual association.
  • The church in Corinth consisted of a definite number of believers, such that Paul could speak of a punishment inflicted by the majority (2 Cor. 2:6).
  • Not only does the New Testament speak of the reality of church membership, but its dozens of “one anothers” are written to local churches, which fill out our understanding of what church membership should practically look like.

Why is it important?
Biblical church membership is important because the church presents God’s witness to himself in the world. It displays his glory. In the church’s membership, then, non-Christians should see in the lives of God’s changed people that God is holy and gracious and that his gospel is powerful for saving and transforming sinners.

Christian Maturity: Faithfulness Part III

Daniel 3:14-18
14 Nebuchadnezzar asked them, "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, is it true that you don't serve my gods or worship the gold statue I have set up? 15 Now if you're ready, when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, drum, and every kind of music, fall down and worship the statue I made. But if you don't worship it, you will immediately be thrown into a furnace of blazing fire—and who is the god who can rescue you from my power?" 16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king, "Nebuchadnezzar, we don't need to give you an answer to this question. 17 If the God we serve exists, then He can rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire, and He can rescue us from the power of you, the king. 18 But even if He does not rescue us, we want you as king to know that we will not serve your gods or worship the gold statue you set up."

Previously on Faithfulness
1. Daniel & his friends had refused the king’s food because of their vow to the Lord. Their people had been taken captive & as an act of contrition, they had refused “party foods” like meat & wine
2. Daniel & his friends convinced the chief eunuch to do this despite the king’s orders. They took a 10 day test & after the 10 days, God rewarded their faithfulness by making their appearance better than those around them (see Daniel 1:15).
3. Daniel & his friends we’re given understanding in all manner of literature & wisdom. Daniel was given the ability to interpret visions & dreams (see Daniel 1:16-19).
4. They were 10 times better than any of the wisemen & magicians of their eras (see Daniel 1:20).

Key Points
• Synopsis
King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream he didn’t understand. He wanted a revelation of what the dream meant but refused to tell anyone what the dream was for fear that somebody would lie to him about the meaning. Daniel & his friends prayed for revelation & God answered. He revealed both the dream & it’s meaning. The King was so happy, he rewarded Daniel w/offerings, honor & power. Daniel was given charge over the province of Babylon & was promoted as chief among the wisemen. Daniel then made his friends the governors’ of the province of Babylon while he remained at the King’s side.

• The King of Babylon was considered a god-king.
Psalm 82:6-7
6 I said, "You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High. 7 However, you will die like men and fall like any other ruler."

• Faithfulness will be tested. What is the difference between testing & temptation – the result. (See Daniel 3:14-15)
Isaiah 48:10
10 Look, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.

Story: Faithfulness Being Tested
One stormy night an elderly couple entered the lobby of a small hotel and asked for a room. The clerk said they were filled, as were all the hotels in town. "But I can't send a fine couple like you out in the rain," he said. "Would you be willing to sleep in my room?" The couple hesitated, but the clerk insisted. The next morning when the man paid his bill, he said, "You're the kind of man who should be managing the best hotel in the United States. Someday I'll build you one." The clerk smiled politely. A few years later the clerk received a letter from the elderly man, recalling that stormy night and asking him to come to New York. A round-trip ticket was enclosed. When the clerk arrived, his host took him to the corner of 5th Avenue and 34th Street, where stood a magnificent new building. "That," explained the man, "is the hotel I have built for you to manage." The man was William Waldorf Astor, and the hotel was the original Waldorf-Astoria. The young clerk, George C. Boldt, became its first manager.

Hebrews 2:18
18 For since He Himself was tested and has suffered, He is able to help those who are tested.

Hebrews 4:14-16
14 Therefore since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens – Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to the confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tested in every way as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us at the proper time.

True Faithfulness is never compromised (See Daniel 3:16-17)

Story: Faithfulness Being Tested
Briars in the Cotton Patch is a documentary directed by Faith Fuller. It tells the story of Clarence Jordan. Clarence had 2 Ph.D.s, one in agriculture and one in Greek and Hebrew. He was a gifted man who was called to serve the poor. In the 1940s, he founded a farm in Americus, Georgia, and called it Koinonia Farm. It was a community for poor whites and poor blacks. As you might guess, such an idea did not go over well in the Deep South of the '40s. Ironically, much of the resistance came from good church people who followed the laws of segregation as much as the other folk in town. The town people tried everything to stop Clarence. They tried boycotting him, and slashing workers' tires when they came to town. Over and over, for fourteen years, they tried to stop him.

Finally, in 1954, the Ku Klux Klan had enough of Clarence Jordan, so they decided to get rid of him once and for all. They came one night with guns and torches and set fire to every building on Koinonia Farm but Clarence's home, which they riddled with bullets. And they chased off all the families except one black family which refused to leave. Clarence recognized the voices of many of the Klansmen, and, as you might guess, some of them were church people. Another was the local newspaper's reporter. The next day, the reporter came out to see what remained of the farm. The rubble still smoldered and the land was scorched, but he found Clarence in the field, hoeing and planting.

"I heard the awful news," he called to Clarence, "and I came out to do a story on the tragedy of your farm closing." Clarence just kept on hoeing and planting. The reporter kept prodding, kept poking, trying to get a rise from this quietly determined man who seemed to be planting instead of packing his bags. So, finally, the reporter said in a haughty voice, "Well, Dr. Jordan, you got two of them Ph.D.s and you've but fourteen years into this farm, and there's nothing left of it at all. Just how successful do you think you've been?"

Clarence stopped hoeing, turned toward the reporter with his penetrating blue eyes, and said quietly but firmly, "About as successful as the cross. Sir, I don't think you understand us. What we are about is not success but faithfulness. We're staying. Good day." Beginning that day, Clarence and his companions rebuilt Koinonia and the farm is going strong today (see http://www.koinoniapartners.org)

• Faithfulness IS NOT attached to what God has given or not given to us. It is attached to the Godhood of God (see verse Daniel 3:18)

Genesis 1:1
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Isaiah 43:10-12
10 "You are My witnesses" —the LORD's declaration—"and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe Me and understand that I am He. No god was formed before Me, and there will be none after Me. 11 I, I am the LORD, and there is no other Savior but Me. 12 I alone declared, saved, and proclaimed—and not some foreign god among you. So you are My witnesses"—the LORD's declaration—"and I am God.

Isaiah 45:21-22
21 Speak up and present [your case] —yes, let them take counsel together. Who predicted this long ago? Who announced it from ancient times? Was it not I, the LORD? There is no other God but Me, a righteous God and Savior; there is no one except Me. 22 Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth. For I am God, and there is no other.

How To Stop A Tree From Bearing Fruit

I happened upon this from my Myspace Blog. It's amazing what a year can do...

The Healing Begins (How to Stop a Tree from Bearing Fruit)

I'm sharing this because I know a lot of us are feeling some of the same things. We all go through heartbreak, disappointment and trials that cause us to question even the very thing we stand for. But after all that rain, the clouds are breaking and the sun is beginning to shine through… So that afterwards you can see things with an even clearer, more experienced perspective.

There is a beautiful tree I pass every day on the way to work. During the fall season, it drops small fruit onto the sidewalk, causing everyone passing it a bit of an obstacle course (especially because when the fruit is stepped on, it produces an unpleasant odor.)

The thought came to my mind that maybe there was a way to stop that tree from producing that fruit, therefore reducing the annoyance to all passers-by.

God used that tree (of all things) to teach me a lesson. I researched the ways that one can stop a tree from bearing fruit. When I looked up this particular type of tree, I found that the only way to stop it from bearing fruit was to CUT IT DOWN and then RIP THE ROOTS OUT.

The past six months have brought many heartbreaking events. Listing them here would add to the weight on my heart – but for those who know us you have some idea.
Through those weeks, days and long hours the thought has crossed my mind that maybe I'm pointed in the wrong direction. Maybe serving people (and the Lord) is not all it's cracked up to be. (Note: Yes, this may sound sacrilegious coming from a 'Pastor's Wife', but let's be honest – We all go through trials, and if we could just be more genuine about our struggles maybe we could help each other out a little more. I am striving to be this candid for two purposes: To minimize the likelihood of getting stuck in a façade that makes it appear as if everything is perfect and that I have no problems; and to also help out anyone else who is feeling the same way.)

When I first started on this journey, the excitement and energy could barely be contained. And with anything that is worthwhile, there came a season where that excitement then develops into discipline – To grow in understanding and realize that faith is not a feeling.

Through those times, we've accomplished what many in our outside circle deem a success. But when so many challenges and heartbreaks come along, it is natural to question. It is natural to think about taking the easy way out. It's natural to think about fleeing and starting all over. But deep within I know unswervingly that I have been called to something different. I wouldn't be happy as Jane Smith with 2.5 kids, 3 car garage and a husband I never see but whom brings home a six-figure paycheck, because I wouldn't be fulfilling my true purpose.

Of all the possible things God could speak to me through, He used a tree.

The trials that have arrived as of late have been attempts to destroy the growth that has already occurred, and to prevent it from developing any further. Many of us have gone through the wringer lately, and it is not a coincidence. When people in our lives leave, we feel disconnected, as if our ROOTS have been RIPPED OUT. What we thought was a central part of our lives is now detached. When we go through personal struggle and disappointment, we can easily be CUT DOWN.

This revelation has helped me come to the conclusion that I will not let myself be CUT DOWN; my roots are firmly planted and will not be RIPPED OUT. I will NOT be defeated.

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.- 1 Peter 5:8,9a

But I will hope continually, and will praise You yet more and more.- Psalm 71:14
